FAQ

Rooted makes nut-free grooming easy, with beard oils, balms, and butters built for performance and sensitivity

What’s the difference between beard oil, butter, and balm?

Each product supports a different part of your grooming routine:

  • Beard Oil: Lightweight hydration for both beard and skin. Use daily to soften coarse hair, reduce itch, and support healthy growth.
  • Beard Butter: Deep nourishment and conditioning without hold. Ideal for beard health or dry skin, best used a few times a week after a shower.
  • Beard Balm: Adds light hold while locking in moisture. Great for shaping and styling, with added protection from wind, sun, or harsh weather. Best used after applying beard oil.

All three use our nutrient-rich, nut-free oil blend including organic hemp seed oil, NZ grown kiwi seed oil, NZ grown avocado oil, and more.

What makes Rooted different?

Rooted was built for beards that want better.

We don’t just pick ingredients that sound trendy, we choose them because they work. Our formulas are rich in nourishing, anti-inflammatory oils like hemp seed, kiwi seed, avocado, and flax, all known to support skin health, hair strength, and overall beard condition.

We also build our scents around ingredients with real benefits.

Our current blends feature kawakawa, a traditional Māori plant used to calm and restore irritated skin, and mānuka, known for its antimicrobial and healing properties. Every essential oil in our lineup is chosen for a reason - not just for smell, but for how it works with your skin and beard.

Future scents will follow the same philosophy: rooted in nature, functional in purpose. You’ll always know there’s a reason behind what we use.

Are your products suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. Everything we make is designed to be gentle, effective, and free from common irritants. Our range is:

  • Nut-free
  • Synthetic fragrance-free
  • Packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients like hemp seed oil and kawakawa
  • Scented only with essential oils, used at low, skin-safe levels

If you're particularly sensitive, try our unscented line. Same formula, no added scent.

How long do your products last?

We use fresh, cold-pressed oils like kiwi seed and flax seed, avoiding synthetic preservatives. Because of this, we recommend using your products within 6 months of opening.

To ensure quality, we produce in small batches, so you're never getting old stock.

Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to get the most out of your product.

Why don't you use common industry oils like Argan, Almond or Jojoba?

Our commitment is to create the safest and most effective formulas on the market. That starts with what we leave out.

We are a 100% nut-free brand. This decision was twofold: first, to eliminate the risk for customers with common nut allergies. Second, due to widespread concerns around the sustainability and ethical sourcing of ingredients like Argan oil, we prioritise using traceable, locally-grown New Zealand oils wherever possible. This ensures our formulas are safe and aligned with our values.

When it comes to other industry standards like Jojoba oil, our choice was based purely on scientific performance. While Jojoba is a popular ingredient, our research and testing led us to a superior alternative: Olive Squalane.

Squalane's molecular structure is almost identical to your skin's own natural moisturiser (sebum). This makes it a high-performance ingredient for a few key reasons:

  • Faster Absorption: It sinks in almost instantly.
  • Lighter Feel: It provides deep hydration without any greasy residue.
  • Highly Non-Comedogenic: It won't clog pores.

Ultimately, we don't formulate based on trends. We formulate for the best possible result.

What if I have an allergy or sensitivity to an ingredient in your blend?

We can help. Because we produce everything in small, handcrafted batches right here in Marton, we have the flexibility to work with custom requests.

If you have a known sensitivity to one of our ingredients (even a non-nut ingredient) please get in touch with us through our contact page before you order.

We’ll do our best to create a custom batch that works for you. That's one of the biggest advantages of being a small, local NZ business.

Are your products vegan and cruelty-free?

  • Yes, we’re cruelty-free, all testing is on our own human beards! Most of our products are vegan, with the exception of our beard balm, which contains beeswax. If you’re after a fully vegan option, our beard oil and butter are both wax-free.
  • Check out our full ingredients list here. If something in our blend isn’t your cup of tea, let us know. We’ll do our best to sort a custom batch that works for you.

Do you sell beard brushes or combs?

Not yet. We're focused on building the cleanest, most effective nut-free beard care on the market. But we love a good boar bristle brush for distribution and exfoliation, and we’re testing tools that align with our brand values. Stay tuned.

Can I use these if I don’t have a beard?

Our products were made for beards, but the ingredients also work well for:

  • Dry or textured hair
  • Rough or irritated skin
  • Tattoo aftercare
  • Natural hair styling (balm)

If you're not allergic to any ingredients, feel free to use them wherever you need extra care.

Can I straighten my beard?

Yes, but with care. Heat styling can dry your beard out fast. The trick is to use a little Beard Oil before the heat, add a few more drops after to rehydrate, and then use our Beard Balm to lock in the style and nourishment. And try not to straighten every day! For a full guide and proper beard care after straightening, check out our detailed blog post.

Where is Rooted made?

Right here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We use as many local and organic ingredients as we can source, and all our suppliers are NZ-based. We believe in supporting local and keeping our footprint small.

Do you ship internationally?
